Greenwald challenges Latham to five debates

Representative Tom Latham is back in Iowa for the summer recess, and his challenger Becky Greenwald’s campaign manager sent an open letter to Latham’s campaign manager today asking the incumbent to participate in five debates, including four this month.

The full text of that letter is after the jump.

Meanwhile, Republican candidate Kim Schmett has taped a web ad of himself debating Congressman Leonard Boswell, making light of the fact that the third district incumbent is unlikely to agree to debate this fall.

Tom Latham for Congress

Dear Mr. Hinch,

I would like to welcome Congressman Latham back to the district for the August recess. Although I am certain that Mr. Latham will be very busy with campaign related activities we trust that you will be able to find time for Mr. Latham to engage with Becky Greenwald in at least four public debates throughout the month of August and at least one debate as the election nears.

Becky believes deeply that political debates are a vital part of our democratic process. Public debates between those seeking office are truly one of the best traditions of this country. Most importantly it gives constituents the opportunity to hear why these people want to represent them in Congress.

In such an important election year we trust that Congressman Latham will take this offer seriously and appear with Becky in five debates to give voters the opportunity to hear from the candidates.

Therefore, we propose these four debates to be one hour in length in the month of August and at least one debate to be held as the election approaches. We know that Congressman Latham has a hectic schedule, but we feel that the recess is a great time to debate and should work well for Mr. Latham’s schedule.

The Greenwald campaign welcomes the opportunity to sit down with the Latham Campaign to work out the specifics of these debates and ensure they will be fair and equitable to all parties involved.

If we have learned anything from this election season, it is that the voters are engaged and paying attention to politics. We hope that Congressman Latham will join us, and take advantage of this perfect opportunity to let the voters see their choices side-by-side.

Sincerely,

Robert Brennan

campaign manager
