HF 510: are you serious? How have we not heard about this bill yet? Its being voted on TODAY, and no one is talking about this legislation that will raise wireless taxes by over 50%. And that means, higher taxes for everyone. As far as I can tell, this comes from a corrupt lobbying effort by a few of the smaller carriers, since the gains in revenue will be used to subsidize smaller carriers through a “wireless cost recovery fund.”
It is crazy that we haven't been talking about this, since it impacts just about everyone!

I was not familiar with this bill
and don’t know enough to form an opinion on its likely impact. Here’s a link to the text. You can view the lobbyist declarations here. It’s not just small cell phone carriers supporting the bill.
FYI, I almost deleted this diary, because the title made it look like spam rather than something related to the Iowa legislature.

hf 644
The bill is now HF 644, not HF 510. It increases the surcharge for E911 from 65 cents to $1. It is collected quarterly I believe meaning your wireless surcharges will increase about $1.40 a year for E911.
The money (about $6 million a year) is for E911 services. It does include some reporting/audit requirements on how the money is used i believe. Whether it is needed or not is something you can decide for yourself. It is still possible the Governor will veto it, so write his office if you are really upset.
The House passed the bill unanimously; the Senate passed the bill 39-11 (10 Republicans, one Democrat voting against the bill). It is on its way to the Governor
