2010 Essential Races - Who Would You Support?

[cross-posted at www.DLCC.org]

Let's try something different:  Which legislative races do you care about?

Out of over 6,000 state legislative districts up for grabs this year, we've chosen 40 key races to highlight on our 2010 “Essential Races” list.  These are 40 critical races that we anticipate will show which way the political tide is turning this fall.

But we recognize our own limitations. There are plenty of other key races all across the country — so we're asking for your help in identifying them.

For the next few weeks, we'll be accepting nominations from the public for 10 additional state legislative races to be added to our 2010 “Essential Races” list.

Anyone can submit a nomination.  Any campaign for state legislature in 2010 is eligible.

It only takes a few clicks, and it could potentially make a huge difference.

Back in 2008, the Essential Races chosen through public nominations included a lot of campaigns in battleground states, but they also included a few campaigns in states that weren't top targets, but where something about the district or the Democratic nominee made the race unique and deserving of special attention.

We might have overlooked some of those key races without your help, and we'd be foolish not to ask for it again this year.

So who should we add to the list, and why?

  • two Iowa districts

already made the DLCC’s list of the first 20 “essential races”: Iowa House district 74 and Iowa Senate district 37. Republican Kent Sorenson won House district 74 in a 2008 surprise, but he vacated the seat this year in order to challenge State Senator Staci Appel in Senate district 37. That contest is one of the Iowa GOP’s top targets this year, and will probably be the most expensive state legislative race. As of September 2010, Iowa Senate district 37 had 15196 registered Democrats, 15571 Republicans and 16300 no-party voters.

Democrat Scott Ourth got a big head start in campaigning for House district 74, which comprises most of Warren County. The Republican candidate, Glen Massie, is a close ally of Sorenson. It’s a relatively balanced district in terms of voter registration. As of September 2010, there were 7978 registered Democrats, 7514 Republicans and 8057 no-party voters in House district 74. From what I hear, this is not one of the GOP’s top targeted Iowa House races.

Other competitive Iowa Senate races include Senate districts 1, 9, and 45. There are easily a dozen highly competitive Iowa House races.

  • Iowa House district 51

which is Rod Roberts’ old seat, got added to the DLCC’s list of second 20 “essential races.” This should be a pickup for Democrat Dan Muhlbauer; he’s been endorsed by Carroll Mayor Jim Pedelty and former GOP state rep Art Neu.
