Last week, Barack Obama announced some very exciting news. Our president will be travelling to Copenhagen next month and is offering to cut US emissions of greenhouse gases by 17% of 2005 levels by the year 2020.
This is indeed great news, but we need to work even harder to move our country away from coal-fired power and towards the energy sources of the future, and we need to ensure that the EPA has the authority to regulate emissions effectively.
Therefore, 1Sky is holding rallies across the country to remind our leaders to take real action on the climate before time runs out, and ensure that we hold our own country and the world accountable. A rally taking place in Des Moines tomorrow was already listed amongst upcoming events, but I want to make sure you all know about other events in your area as well.
We'll have some signs available, but ask you to bring your own as well. We'll also be delivering hundreds of postcards from around the state next week, and we hope that you can join us.
You can let us know that you'll be coming by registering at our website at http://local.1sky.org or you can simply reply to this diary.
If you can't join us this week, but would like to get involved, we would love your help with responding to the events taking place during the Copenhagen summit in just over a week. If you'd be willing to write a letter to your local paper or representatives, make a phone call, or attend an event, we'd really appreciate the chance to add you to our list of rapid responders. If you have any questions or you're willing to help out, please shoot me an email at matt@1sky.org or call me at 515-577-7861.
But whatever your involvement, we appreciate your support and hope you'll keep spreading the message that our climate needs urgent action now.
