Kurt Meyer's DEEP Minnesota Roots

With only days to go before the June 3rd primary, it looks like some basic facts are finally coming out about Iowa'a 4th District congressional candidate Kurt Meyer. This past Friday, the Des Moines Register wrote about Kurt's tenuous connection to Iowa.

  1. Kurt Meyer has not filed an Iowa tax return in TEN years!
  2. Kurt Meyer officially got his Iowa driver's license on Dec. 31st, 2007.
  3. Kurt's son attends school in Minneapolis – 4 years after Kurt MOVES to Iowa.

Kurt claims he moved back to Iowa in 2004, but the facts don't back this up.

Additional evidence of Kurt's purposeful deceit is found in a number of political donations that Meyer and his wife have made over the past several years.

If Kurt moved to Iowa 4 years ago, why have 4 out of 5 political donations to political candidates and the Iowa Democratic Party list his suburban Edina, Minnesota address?

1. Most recently Kurt donated $1,000 to the IA Dem Party on Oct. 17, 2007 and Meyer's put down the address of his home the wealthy suburb of Edina, Minnesota.

What's up with that?

2. A month earlier – Sept. 18, 2007 – Kurt's wife (Paula R Meyer) made an $1,800 donation to Hillary Clinton for President and listed their St. Ansgar home as her residence.

3. In 2006 Kurt donated his first $400 to the IA Dem Party and again used his upscale suburban Edina, Minnesota address.

4. Also, in 2006, Meyer's wife donated $250 to Spencer for Congress, again listing the Edina, Minnesota.

5. Another 2006 donation from Mrs Paula R Meyers for $500 for Klobuchar for Minnesota is listed at the Edina, Minnesota address.

Why did Kurt decide to run for Congress from Iowa rather than Minnesota where his high school aged son still lives?

No Iowa taxes no residence. What is Kurt hiding?

Iowa is obviously a great place to live, but is a person who has only lived in the state for a few months in his second home qualified to represent Iowans true needs.

Kurt's entire campaign has been dishonest about his limited connection to Iowa and Iowans deserve an explanation…

Maybe Meyer should try running in Minnesota next time, these are not deceits that Iowans will take lightly in November's election. The Democratic Party would do well to heed this warning or we will be sending Tom Latham back to Congress once again.

About the Author(s)

MCDem

  • leave his son out of it

There are a lot of reasons not to pull a teenager out of a school that is a good fit for him.

Not knowing the particulars of the situation, I think it is wrong to pass judgment on other parents’ choice of school for their children.

    • minor line...

…in whole article about his son. Never mentioned again after the first statement.  What is your view on the rest of the facts desmoinesdem?

Just curious if you read farther then that. You had asked in an earlier thread about facts.  Here are some, and you don’t comment, but only on one line in one paragraph.

      • I have addressed this in other threads

I do not consider Minnesota a distant, foreign land whose inhabitants are unable to relate to the concerns of Iowans.

For me, how long Kurt Meyer has lived and worked in Minnesota is a non-issue. It tells me nothing about whether he would be an effective representative for Iowa’s fourth district.

I understand that many voters are moved by “he’s not a real Iowan” appeals, but that’s not my thing.

I want to know what candidates think about the issues, what their priorities would be in Congress, and what skills they bring to the table that would help them achieve their goals if elected to Congress.

Rahm Emanuel was a carpet-bagger of sorts, having worked in Washington for a long time before going back to Illinois to run for Congress. He’s only been in Congress for three terms, but he is already quite influential. I haven’t heard anyone say he doesn’t represent his district well (though there are many other complaints about him).

        • His Positioning

doesn’t bother you at all. About not registering until the day of the cacuss in January? The D.L. thing the last day of the year, last year…all attempts to make it look like he has been an Iowan.

Integrity means a lot to me, as much as issues and more then where someone lived. Stating something so small as a place of residence, then not really living there, as backed by the facts above just leads me to believe he wont have the integrity OR honesty in D.C. should he ever make it there.

Integrity about saying he hasn’t worked for his consulting firm since running for office, when he actually has, as proven in the facts above and in earlier threads. Intriguing isn’t it.

I don’t necassarily want a perfect person in office, but I would like to have someone in office that doesn’t feel it is ok to lie.

        • hard to lie

if you are living and working in Washington while running for an office in Illinois.  So again, Desmoinesdem, you are comparing apples to oranges.

I want someone who is working in IOWA, and living and paying taxes in IOWA to represent me. What better way for him to understand the people of IOWA then to work, live, and pay taxes here and not some other state.

        • Kurt's Residency Matters to Most Iowans

and would be an automatic target for Latham to use in the fall. It’s hard to understand how desmoinesdem can’t understand this.

But then they defend Ed Fallon’s every breath.

Kurt’s issues, it would be interesting to know what they really are, but it’s hard to believe what he says on the issues if he’s willing to lie about his background to get elected.

In the case of using Hillary Clinton and Rahm Emmanuel as examples of where carpetbagging is OK, desmoinesdem misses the  point that both Hillary and Rahm had been recruited to run in those states by significant numbers of party leadership. And Kurt Meyer’s does not have even close to their level of political experience.

Also, Rahm Emmanuel had been active in Illinois politics before going to work in the Clinton White House. He was gone roughly 10 years before he decided to come back and run for Congress, something he probably would’ve already done if he hadn’t served in the White House.

On a positive note, it’s clear that Kurt Meyer would be in good company here as both Hillary and Emmanuel are avid DLC leaders and Kurt obviously fits in this mode. Not something I thought that desmoinesdem supported, but then maybe she has different criteria for different candidates and districts.

    • Interesting allowance

desmoinesdem is usually so principled when it come to Boswell and Fallon, but when a real corporate Democrat tries to come to Iowa and buy an election they suddenly get defensive.

The reality of the situation is that when most people move to a state, they bring their children along and they go to school in the same town.

The facts are that Kurt Meyer built a second home in Iowa in 2004 and has claimed that this was his residence during the entire campaign. It’s also true that Kurt’s wife was still working for American Express in 2006 in their Minneapolis headquarters so it’s highly unlikely that the family actually “moved” to Iowa until Kurt suddenly decided that he wanted to be a Congressman.

After all, the driver’s license, voter registration and tax returns all support the fact that Kurt was a MINNNESOTA RESIDENT until he wanted to go to Washington DC on the taxpayers dime.

It’s interesting that desmoinesdem suddenly believes that principles, honesty and the truth don’t matter after their vigorous defense of Ed Fallon’s “principled stand” on the issues.

Like in all races, integrity matters. Kurt’s campaign, political career started on a lie and has been maintained on that ever since. If he lies about these simple facts, what else is he going to lie about if he ever got the chance to represent Iowa?

Also, what about his cozy relationship with the credit card industry? Does desmoinesdem support that as well?

  • Let's be civil, please

It really bothers me that everyone is beating up on desmoinesdem just because she has an opinion different than others. I didn’t think this website believed in bullying and ridiculing each other over their opinions, no matter how much we disagree.

She’s right when she says, “I want to know what candidates think about the issues, what their priorities would be in Congress, and what skills they bring to the table that would help them achieve their goals if elected to Congress.”

Issues, not personal attacks are what we’re about. If not, we’re no better than Bush and Latham.
