Sock Puppets & what I'm Not

( - promoted by Drew Miller)

In the interest of disclosure, I’ve posted my profile on Bleeding Heartland…and I’ve disclosed who I work for.  I work in the office of Rep. Kevin McCarthy – Majority Leader in the Iowa House.  Why do I disclose?  Because it’s ethical and because I’m honest.

Generally, I limit my posting to forwarding on press releases and information about what is going on in the Iowa House.  I’m not here to propagandize or hide who I am.  You won’t find me waging battles in the comments or posting anonymously on Krusty Konservative.  With full disclosure I give you the ability to critically evaluate the information I provide and understand who my boss is.

It seems that some bloggers on the right & left have failed to live up to what I see as an ethical obligation.  There’s a post at the NY Times Caucus blog all about it.

The article talks about recent dust-ups in both Republican and Democratic camps:

Far beyond the political sphere, the latter are commonly known as “sock puppets,” people who use aliases to post comments, posing as people they’re not. There have been a few dustups in recent campaign seasons with staff being exposed as “sock puppets” by anonymously writing comments on blogs and websites that were either boasting their candidates’ merits or slamming opponents.

I personally take the call to “not be a jerk” very seriously.  Bleeding Heartland can be a forum for the future of online progressive activism in Iowa and I welcome everyones participation.  Read the NYT article.  It’s illuminating – and might give you some insight on the discourse that will inevitably arise on this site.

About the Author(s)

  • I don't work in politics

I’ve never had a paid position for any elected official or political campaign. I’m just a volunteer and “freelance activist.” I use a pseudonym for a few reasons, but mainly because I’m involved in some non-profits that do not take a partisan stand, and I don’t want anything I write on politics to be held against one of those groups.

Not that it would be very hard to figure out who I am–I haven’t gone to great lengths to hide my identity.

I plan to volunteer for the Edwards campaign as a precinct captain in the Des Moines suburbs, but I haven’t even made contact with them, and I won’t be coordinating my writing with the Edwards staff.

    • Pseudonyms...

I don’t have a problem with the common blog practice of having a “pseudonym”.  That’s a convention that I’m quite comfortable with.  What I think is inappropriate is if you are a paid staffer for a campaign and you blog anonymously about your candidate.  According to the Pew Internet Survey:

55% use a pseudonym for blogging. (So people are blogging for themselves but using a pseudonym to hide their identities from themselves?)

It would be strange for me to sing the praises of Democratic leadership in the Iowa legislature and not disclose who authorizes my pay stubs!

      Also, desmoinesdem

      I like your writing!

      • so far I like what the House leadership is doing...

…but I hope they won’t be foolish enough to miss this opportunity to pass clean elections reform. Look at some of the progressive legislation that has been adopted in Maine now that more than 75 percent of the legislators are choosing the public financing option. I think Culver would sign this reform if the House and Senate pass it. Gronstal says he is on board, but what about the House leadership?

We do not want to miss this opportunity.
